DBAN is a very efficient data wipe-out tool that completely removes your data on a hard drive you are about to dispose. It’s a self-contained boot disk that boots up your computer and wipes out the data it finds on the hard drive. It works great, just as it promises, on any computers that equip a CD/DVD Rom devices.

But what about those computers that don’t have a CD/DVD Rom or have one that refuses to work anymore? Here are the steps how you can put DBAN on a boot-able USB drive. Thanks to pendrivelinux.com for sharing.

1. Download the latest DBAN.

2. Download (direct download link) Universal USB Installer, and launch it.

3. Select DBAN 2.2.6 from the dropdown list, and pick the drive letter for the USB drive.

4. Click on Create button to start building the USB drive.

One minute or two later, a bootable USB drive with DBAN in it has been successfully created.

Now, plug in the USB drive into the computer you want to wipe out and boot it up. Note that, if you boot up DBAN off a USB hard drive, select autonuke option would wipe out all drives the program finds, including the USB drive.

The following table contains instructions and steps on how to use DBAN to completely wipe a hard disk.

Note: This is not an “I’ll get a cup of coffee and come back in a few minutes” job.  You should assume that regardless of the method used, the wipe method will be an overnight task.

Step 1

Turn on the computer that you would like to clean.You must set the system BIOS to use the CD\DVD drive or USB drives ahead of the Hard disk to boot. Verify the computer is booting to the CDROM drive before the HD,then insert the DBAN CD. PC's vary in the exact requirements to enter the BIOS settings, but usually you press F1, F2 or F12 while the computer is booting.

Step 2

If you have booted correctly form the DBAN CD, then you will see the screen below. At the'boot:_' prompt, press 'ENTER' to start DBAN in interactive mode.

Step 3

After you press 'ENTER' you will see the following screen.

Step 4

If your data is sensitive or contains important information, then please continue to Step 5. However, if your data is NOT sensitive or does NOT contain important information, then please keep ALL defaults and jump to Step 6.

Step 5

At the above screen, click the letter “M” for method and select “RCMP TSSIT OPS-II” by pressing “ENTER.” This method is recommended for sensitive data, and is recommended by the Canadian Government for material up to and including Secret material.

Step 6

Please verify your screen looks like the image here. Your screen may show a different method depending on your choice.

Step 7

At this time, press the “Space” key. This will select your IDE drive that you would like to wipe clean. If you would like to choose a different drive to clean, then use your “Arrow” keys to select the drive and press the “Space” key to select the drive. Warning: All data will be lost including the operating system and all programs. This is not a reversible process!

Step 8

After selecting your drive, your screen should say 'wipe' as shown in the screen image.

Step 9

Since you just selected the disk to wipe clean, now it is time to start the cleaning process. At this time press the 'F10' key.This is the point of no return and will start the cleaning process.

Step 10

Both the 'DoD' and 'RCMP TSSIT OPS-II' process will take a while to finish. Please plan on allocating at least 12 hours for this process until succeeded.

When ever one tries to install a multiboot OSX Window box, you are most likely to run into theboot0:error, or a b0 error. what this means is that the partition that you intend to boot into did not have the active flag set.  Most of these errors arise after you have installed 2 systems and it wouldn't boot into either or both.  This can be easily fixed by the following steps

1. Boot with mac OSX boot disc
2. Goto Utilities and enter Terminal
3. in the terminal type

  diskutil list


Make a note of which disk has the partitions(rdisk0, rdisk1, etc)

4. type

  fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0


you might see the MBR error, don't worry about it.

5. type

  p


and you should see all your partitions.  At this point you would want to figure out which partitions you want to boot into first.  If you have 2 partitions then flag the one you want to be primary last.

For example, you have 2 partitions, 1 and 2.Partition 2 holds windows 7 and 1 holds OSX Snow Leopard.  You want to boot into OSX boot loader to choose which parition to boot, in this case you want to flag the windows partition active first, then flag the OSX partition active,

6. so you would type

   f 2
  write
  y
  f 1
  write
  y
  exit


This would fix your problem, eject your CD and reboot.
